Everywhere I turn people are talking about change makers as if they are a rarefied breed. As a Maverick, I find this surprising because just about anyone can be a change maker; albeit not necessarily a good one!

The Change Maker Group defines change makers thus:

"A Change Maker is someone who has a desire to make change happen, who understands what kind of Change Maker they are and knows how to use their change-making strengths, skills and resilience to influence and make change happen within their organisations".

Mavericks are natural change makers. When they see something that needs to change they get to it. They do not hesitate, they immediately start strategising a solution.

Being a change maker is an essential part of who they are and is a core concept of the Maverick DRIVEN Leadership™ methodology.

Millennial Maverick Behaviourists are fast learning that they have the ability to make change happen on the world stage. With the use of Social Media and technology, they are affecting change on a fantastic scale. Now they are choosing to apply that knowledge within the workplace.

The problem that they face is that often the organisations that they work within, either don't believe change makers can be developed or they believe that only those with 'responsibility for change' should get training.

This is a fallacy, and is dangerous belief system for the organisation.

Everyone is capable of making a difference and everyone should be trained to do so. If they don't the good people will leave and the poor people will stay.

To encourage change makers in your organisation you should:

  • Create an environment where change is accepted and welcomed
  • Reward individuals for their curiosity and challenge
  • Encourage maverick behaviour (Socialised or Maverick Behaviourist)
  • Accept that mistakes will happen and that great learning can come from it (Learning Organisation)
  • Ensure training includes learning how to develop Maverick Attributes (see below)

Mavericks are natural change makers. Others can learn how to become effective change makers. If a company is to survive then it will need to be able to embrace ethical change.

Lack of development leads to weakness. No company can survive on the labour of the weak.
